A few years ago, a Surprise, AZ resident was involved in a car crash that left her with minor injuries. The incident occurred during July of 2011 and according to the claim, the plaintiff Linda Vera McCormick had been driving her Kia Rio down Litchfield and Bell roads. She is claiming that an Arizona police officer rear-ended her due to negligent driving behavior. Per the original documents, McCormick had been preparing to turn right at the time of the accident. The police officer has since been admonished and has received counseling.
In her claim, McCormick is asking for $50,000 in compensation to cover all medical costs. Since the accident, she is claiming she has sustained severe neck and back injuries which have resulted in two trips to the hospital and ongoing medical care. The costs equal out to $10,000 and her vehicle has sustained almost a grand in property damage according to the appraisal.
Unfortunately, car accidents aren’t an uncommon incident in the state of Arizona. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), there were over 100,000 traffic crashes in 2011 – 754 of which were fatal and 33,000 of which resulted in serious injuries. ADOT also reported that the most common manner of collision was rear-end accidents with the most common driver violation being speeding.
Rear-end accidents are a unique form of a crash that can result in unique injuries – the number one being whiplash. This is an informal term that refers to a neck injury where the neck is whipped and distorted outside the boundaries of the neck’s normal motion. This can overextend or compress the neck and result in pain and sensory disturbance – symptoms that may be delayed for several days after an accident.
